AIA Design Lecture Series | Bridging Cleveland – Miguel Rosales

The CUDC will be hosting an AIA Cleveland Event, Thursday, May 26, 2016. They welcome famed bridge designer Miguel Rosales, president and principal designer of the Boston-based transportation architecture firm Rosales+Partners. Miguel is an architect that has specialized in bridge aesthetics and architecture and urban design throughout his career. He has made it his mission to bring an artistic touch to the often prosaic business of designing bridges in the United States, specializing in elegant, eye-catching bone-thin structures. Miguel will elaborate on the creative process for the four pedestrian bridges he has designed for the City of Cleveland, including the North Coast Harbor Bridge, the Wendy Park Pedestrian Bridge, the dramatic Lakefront Pedestrian Bridge connecting downtown to Lakefront and the Case Western Reserve University S-shaped connector.

TIME – Doors Open at 5:30, Lecture 6:00-7:00

Drinks and hors d’oeuvres will be provided prior to the lecture courtesy of the Cleveland Urban Design Center and AIA Cleveland.

AIA Design Lecture Series | micro MARCRO – Eric Bunge

nARCHITECTS micro MACRO

The CUDC will be hosting an AIA Cleveland Event, Thursday, May 12, 2016. They welcome Eric Bunge of nARCHITECTS. Eric founded nARCHITECTS, with his partner Mimi Hoang in 1999 with the aim of addressing contemporary issues in architecture through conceptually driven, socially engaging and technologically innovative work. The letter ‘n’ represents a variable, indicating their interest in designing for a dynamic variety of experiences within a cohesive approach. In this spirit, they embrace challenges and scales of work ranging from buildings to public spaces to interiors, and across cultural, residential and commercial uses.

Eric’s talk, titled “micro-MACRO” will address:

  • Humane living solutions in dense cities
  • Approaches to architecture / landscape
  • Responding to short & long-term climatic change

Women in Architecture | Film Screening: Making Space

In honor of Women’s History Month, AIA Cleveland presents the highly-anticipated documentary film, Making Space: 5 Women Changing the Face of Architecture (2014). It will screen at the iconic Museum of Contemporary Art (designed by one of the profiled architects, Farshid Moussavi) in Uptown Cleveland on March 10th. AIA’s special guest introducing the film is Sarah Rafson, an architecture writer and researcher based in New York, and a co-editor of sub_teXXt, an online journal by, for, and about women in architecture, associated with ArchiteXX. The exciting event will preface with drinks and refreshments in MOCA’s exhibit space.

Join us for an evening with John Cerone, Director of Virtual Design & Construction at SHoP Architects. John has been instrumental in SHoP’s development of technology and process, specializing in Building Information Modeling (BIM).

John received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the School of Architecture at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio (2002), and his Master of Architecture degree from the Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation at Columbia University (2008). He currently serves as an Adjunct Professor at the Columbia University Graduate School of Planning and Preservation, teaching seminars in ‘Digital Representation’ and ‘Parametric Modeling’. He has taught at Parsons New School for Design in New York and actively lectures on the topic of Virtual Design & Construction.

2015 AIA Cleveland Sand Castle Competition and Volleyball Tournament | July 18th

AIA Cleveland is bringing back their annual summer festival that will bring architecture and design firm personnel and their families together with the public to celebrate design and enjoy the beach! The AIA Cleveland Sand Castle Competition and Beach Volleyball Tournament will take place at Edgewater Beach on Saturday, July 18th and feature a competition of more than two dozen sand castle and volleyball teams populated by Cleveland architecture, engineering, and construction firms.

Graphics/Portfolio Workshop | March 1, 2014

Please join AIA Cleveland in partnership with the CUDC on Saturday, March 1st for the first of four mentorship events in a year-long series. The event will take place from 10:00 am – 6:00 pm at the CUDC, 1309 Euclid Ave., Suite 200, Cleveland, OH 44115.

This event features a workshop focused on honing rendering skills using modern techniques by leading expert, Alex Hogrefe, and will be followed by a portfolio round-robin with principals and partners from some of Cleveland’s most notable firms. We hope to spark a conversation regarding the evolution of how architects present their work and establish their professional identity.

The workshop is open to the public and non CUDC students, but registration is required as space is limited. Please complete registration form here.

Materials Required

All registrants must bring a laptop loaded with Adobe Photoshop and SketchUp. This workshop is a working session and registration is limited in order to provide a desk space for each attendee.

Registrants must bring a portfolio. Portfolios may be in any format (e.g. digital, physical) or progress (e.g. complete, draft, in progress). Students without completed portfolios are encouraged to bring a representative collection of their work. Please come prepared to share and discuss your work.
