Project Summary

This project aims to address how strategic programming and a single architectural intervention can act as a catalyst for reframing a post-industrial landscape within a harsh northern climate as a place for rich human activity and experience. The project consists of a naturally filtered and passively heated outdoor swimming pool located within a former shipping slip; an indoor natatorium; and a thermal bathing facility located within four abandoned silo structures. By re-presenting water at various scales, temperatures, and states, the Duluth Harbor Baths offer a fully immersive and haptic understanding of the region’s extreme climate.
