The College of Architecture and Environmental Design offers a number of degree programs in urban design at the CUDC, including the professional M.Arch., the post-professional Master of Urban Design and the Certificate in Urban Design. Click here for more information on these programs.

Faculty from the CUDC also participate in the curriculum of the Maxine Goodman Levin College of Urban Affairs at Cleveland State University, offering introductory courses in urban design for students with urban planning backgrounds.

In CUDC graduate studios, students investigate real-world problems facing urban places in Northeast Ohio. They meet with and respond to community members and local officials, and these groups are represented on studio juries, along with design professionals. Summaries of these studios are published in the CUDC Quarterly. In some cases, the students’ helps shape the civic development agenda, providing a focus around which citizens and officials can work together. Here are a few examples of recent studio projects and their impact:

Huron Road Park conceptual designs (Cleveland)
Sketch projects for an under-used open space in Downtown Cleveland that was eventually re-developed by the city and local non-profits

Downtown Youngstown Studio (Youngstown)
A conceptual master plan for the center of Youngstown that informed the City’s ongoing planning process

Northern Quadrangle Studio (Cleveland)
A semester long project leading to two complementary visions for an important area of Cleveland that had seen little planning attention
