stockyard Neighborhood master Plan

stockyard neighborhood - OH

The Stockyards Neighborhood on Cleveland’s west side has been a site of commerce and employment since the late 1800s when it became the city’s primary center for the transport and processing of livestock. The Stockyards area extends west of the ClarkMetro neighborhood from West 44th Street to West 73rd. It is bounded on the north by I-90 and on the south by Denison Avenue and Cleveland Metropark’s Brookside Reservation. The main commercial corridor is West 65th Street, and Clark, Storer and Denison avenues provide east-west access. As the food processing industry was re-structured after World War II, the main stockyard gradually declined, finally closing in 1968. A large part of the site was redeveloped as a shopping center, which still serves as one of the neighborhood’s main convenience retail centers.

This Study re-envisions the Stockyard neighborhood, evaluating existing conditions and making recommendations to weave together the interconnected industries, businesses, institutions, housing and green space that exist today and will be proposed through this design exercise. We have produced a neighborhood plan update for the area, outlining land use and zoning recommendations, infrastructure improvements, green space opportunities and connections.
