27 FEBRUARY 2008

On February 27, 2008, the Cleveland Urban Design Collaborative (CUDC) conducted a workshop on temporary uses for vacant buildings and sites. Local design practitioners, planners, community development corporation staff, artists and neighborhood activists were invited to join us for a one-day exploration of temporary use projects as a way to stabilize transitional areas, promote economic development, and enhance the quality of life in urban neighborhoods.

The workshop consisted of morning presentations at the CUDC, and in the afternoon, we toured several neighborhoods and talked about ideas for temporary use projects for specific sites. Workshop participants were encouraged to make recommendations about potential sites to look at when they registered for the event. As an outcome of the workshop, we will select and implement at least one temporary use project for a Cleveland neighborhood.

The workshop was made possible with the support of the Sears-Swetland Foundation. It is being co-sponsored by the Cleveland Neighborhood Development Coalition and the Cleveland Section of the Ohio Planning Conference.
