West 76th Streetscape

CLEVELAND, OH

Battery Park is a major new residential development overlooking Lake Erie in Cleveland’s Detroit-Shoreway neighborhood. While the area around the site has a strong community spirit, its appearance has suffered, and Neighborhood Progress, Inc. and the Detroit-Shoreway Community Development Organization jointly decided that the new investment in the vicinity presented an excellent opportunity to make improvements to the existing residential streets They asked the CUDC to meet with the local block club in order to discuss potential improvements. The CUDC proposed a variety of measures, including programs to assist in better lawn maintenance and exterior home improvements. The main entry to the neighborhood is to be improved by planting of greenery in commercial parking lots. The addition of new bus shelters, lighting, and visually pleasing guardrails was also discussed. Another focus of the project involved the redesign of a dank, poorly lit tunnel leading to Edgewater Park. The CUDC developed a concept for a safe and celebratory transition from the neighborhood to the beach for both current residents and homeowners in the new development.
